This book was suggested to me by Adrienne, and she said if I didn't like it, she wasn't going to recommend any more books to me. Well, I really liked it, Adrienne!
I don't want to give too much away, since I would recommend you read it. Without giving too much away, there is something that happens in the book that affects the main character deeply. (Should I give more info, Ad?)
The story is a kind of fairy tale, which I didn't really get until they talked about dragons in the forest. In the middle, I got kind of confused about what happened to Lissar, the main character. But it gets explained later on (although much later). I would like to read it again now that I know what was going on, and it probably won't be so confusing. But, I think if you keep that in mind, the fairy tale thing, it might make more sense.
This is definitely a story of fear, love, survival, and emotional healing. I really liked the evolution of Lissar and how the book turns out in the end. So, I would give it 4 out of 5 stars, and am definitely planning on reading it again. I hope my review isn't totally confusing. Like I said, I don't want to give too much away.
By the way, some ladies in my ward are starting a book club, finally! Our first book is called "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" by Lisa See. I have only had it since yesterday and I am totally enthralled. So, if anyone wants to read this with me, I would love it! (Just in case you were looking for a book to read right now!)

I actually read Snow Flower and the Secret Fan several months ago for my book club. I thought it was very good, although I'm not sure I like how it ended. It did make me very interested in feet binding which I ended up researching quite a bit on the internet.
About Deerskin, it is based on a fairly unknown fairy tail called Donkeyskin, which is something that Robin McKinley does pretty frequently. (She has written books based on Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty, and Robin Hood.) When she gets into "magical" aspects in her books it can get a little confusing, especially if you're not familiar with her writing style. I really like her main characters, which I think is a big part of why I enjoy her books so much. Deerskin and The Blue Sword are my favorite of her books and I'm glad that you liked it Shannan. (Especially after my last recommendation didn't go very well! ;) )
I swear, you have read everything! The foot binding part in Snow Flower was pretty intense. I did end up on the internet yesterday doing some research about it, too!
Yeah, I am not sure what you are saying this book is about. I am not much into fantasy so maybe I will put this on my list to read when I can't think of anything else. Does that sound mean? What book didn't Shannan like? I am just curious.
I think I read this book years ago. I know I've read Blue Sword, Beauty, and Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley. I should go back and re-read this to remember it (if I actually did read it). Even though I'm not a huge fantasy fan, I do like McKinley's writing.
